Makryammos Bungalows (Thassos): Nature and sea on a Greek island with an 8-month-old

Pınar stayed three nights at Makryammos Bungalows on the island of Thassos in July 2025 with her 8-month-old — the first Baby Proof Travel experience from Greece. Her verdict: 8 out of 10, and "I'd go back, and recommend it to a friend."

The sea: close to ideal for a baby

The star of this stay is the sea. In Pınar's words, "pristine and magnificent" — and it carries both of the features that matter most to a family with a baby: a sandy entry, and a gentle, slow drop-off. Asked "was the sea shallow and safe?", she answered a wholehearted "Yes". For a beach-centred holiday with an 8-month-old, it's hard to describe much better.

Bungalows and sleep: well-equipped, set in nature

The rooms are plush bungalow-style and well equipped; a bassinet was available. As it isn't a sprawling resort, the quiet of nature comes free — the Sleep & room category earned full marks. Getting around the resort with a stroller was comfortable, too.

Food: functional, not shining

The hotel is half board. High chairs are available, but there's no baby menu or buffet, and Pınar found the dinner buffet "middling". One unexpected detail: bees. "There were a lot of bees at the hotel; because of them we ended up eating dinner indoors," she says. Not unusual on the islands — but better to know before you go.

The grounds: gentle slopes, smart room choice

The grounds are gently sloped — "not so much that you can't manage with a baby," in Pınar's words — but her practical advice is clear: when choosing a room type, pay attention to how close it is to the beach. With a well-placed bungalow, the slope largely stops being an issue.

No kids' club — the story behind the score

There is no kids' club, no entertainment programme and no separate children's pool. None of it affected Pınar's stay with an 8-month-old ("I simply didn't need it yet") — but our criteria work the same way for every hotel, so the Family experience category scores low. Read the score below with that in mind: it isn't a quality grade, it's a suitability map for families with babies and small children.

Scoring note: The scores are Pınar's own category-by-category ratings; we saw no contradiction with what she wrote, so we made no adjustments. "Family experience" sits at 4/20 because the hotel offers no kids' club, entertainment or separate children's pool — a deliberate choice by the resort that was no problem at all with an 8-month-old, but one families with older children should weigh knowingly. The picture in Sleep, Hygiene and Sea, meanwhile, is genuinely strong for a family with a baby.
